My Top Restaurant Picks for Breakfast

I don't know about you guys, but breakfast is my favourite meal of the day and I love that Cape Town has so many delicious and healthy spots! The choices are endless but I have narrowed down a list of my top 5 picks for a little healthy inspo :)

Some healthy breakfast tips when eating out:

  • When you eat out for breakfast, remember that it is a much larger meal than what you would usually eat at home, so make lunch something light or just have a small snack in the afternoon to push you through until dinner.

  • Bulk up breakfasts with vegetables such as tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, peppers, broccoli etc.

  • Have a good balance of protein, complex carbs and veggies to keep you satisfied through the rest of the day.

  • Try to avoid high calorie additions at breakfast such as bacon, sausage, fried eggs, butter, rostis, high fat cheeses and pastries and rather choose whole grain or rye bread, poached or boiled eggs or egg white omelettes.

Some healthy swaps:

Fried eggs FOR Poached eggs

Omelette FOR Egg white omelette

Butter FOR Avocado

White bread or bagels FOR Multigrain/ rye bread

Bacon/sausage FOR Smoked salmon or cottage cheese

Granola FOR Oats

Full fat milk/yoghurt FOR Low fat/skim milk/almond milk

Cappuccino FOR Americano with skim milk/almond milk

My 5 top picks for breakfast in Cape Town:

1. Loading bay (De Waterkant): Beautiful presentation and unusual menu!

  • The green breakfast: mixed seasonal greens, 2 poached eggs, lemony avocado dip and a slice of sourdough

2. Nu (Greenpoint/ Sea Point): This place has so many healthy and fresh options!

  • Any of the open omelettes (opt for egg white) and dressing on the side to just drizzle

  • OR breakfast salad without the cheese and add a slice of rye/seeded bread

3. Tashas (Waterfront or Constantia Village): I love that you can make your own here and they are happy with you making menu changes :)

  • Egg white omelette with roasted cherry tomatoes & mushrooms, side steamed spinach and a slice of 100% rye bread

4. Manna Epicure (Kloof Street): I am obsessed with the coconut bread here!

  • Such a treat! I get the coconut bread with smoked salmon, poached eggs, avo and roasted tomatoes.

5. Harvest café (Bo Kaap): I love the atmosphere and the view here!

  • I get the poached eggs and avo breakfast here – so delish and beautifully presented.

Hope this helps :) Enjoy xxx
